ABOUT SHARON

BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE

After many years of specializing in regulatory law and policy, Sharon made the shift to working on issues relevant to Vermont families as a way to honor her 7th-generation Vermont farm roots and be true to her commitment to being a lifelong learner.

Sharon grew up in Franklin County, Vermont but spent as much time as possible on her grandparents' farm in the Northeast Kingdom. She graduated from the University of Vermont where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English. Sharon went on to earn Juris Doctor and Master of Public Health degrees from George Washington University in Washington, DC. In her early years as an attorney, Sharon worked as committee staff for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions during the chairmanship of Senator James M. Jeffords. Prior to establishing her own practice, Sharon worked in-house for Vermont corporate and non-profit clients focused on healthcare regulatory and policy issues.

Sharon Winn, PLLC

Sharon lives in Central Vermont with her husband, dog, and cats. She has served her community on the development review board, as a local auditor, and most recently as the chair of the town select board.  She is a member of the Vermont Bar Association, the Washington County Bar Association, and Wealth Counsel, a national collaborative of like-minded estate planning attorneys.

Why Estate Planning?

Sharon was weary of practicing in a corporate/political environment, and asked herself whether she really wanted to continue on that path. After some networking, she realized she had an opportunity to make a change, and reflected on what that might look like. Sharon found her calling in serving individual clients in an area that has positive meaning. Estate planning emerged after encouragement from local attorneys that there was a need in the community and that the field was a good fit for her skills and interests. Furthermore, she had the benefit of hard lessons learned through a bad estate planning experience in her own family.

She has not been disappointed. Sharon loves estate planning because it is both highly technical and highly personal. It revolves around people—their narratives, families, and values. Sharon’s job is to delve into clients' personal and financial situations, while respecting the trust they place in her and nurturing the resulting relationship.

Finally, estate planning as a primary practice area allows her to use every aspect of her experiences in life and work to guide clients through a family-focused, heart-centered process to understand the planning they really need and deliver a plan that actually works to keep families out of court and out of conflict.
